Lightsabers were shown, at their peak two hundred years before the original trilogy, during the High Republic era. What began as two prominent lightsaber shades, blue and red, encompassing the dual clashing forces of the galaxy, soon grew unexpectedly. Now there are more lightsaber colors than the iconic twelve planets, bringing zing and entertaining competitions for the space opera audience.
In comparison to the Legends, Star Wars Canon is filled with the expanding and contracting lightsaber world. Every once in a while an innovative character pops up holding a revolutionizing lightsaber blade. Despite the wide range of hues connecting the characters to the philosophical schools of the Galaxy, the rarest blade colors have left a significant impact, shaping life after Order 66 and during the uprise of the Alliance.
In this article, we will take a look at five rarest lightsabers. We will also shed plasma light on the meaning behind the colors, and reason for appearance, while breaking down the wielders who got lucky or unlucky, depending on how you look at it!
The Darksaber: Weapon of the Mandalorians
Draksaber’s appearance in, The Mandalorian series composed by John Favreau, quickly snagged the attention of lightsaber enthusiasts. Darksaber not only has a unique construction but also a rich cultural background. Also known as the katana of the Mandalorians, this lightsaber was first constructed by a nontraditional Mandalorian Pre Vizsla. The people of the planet are quite fond of their hereditary torch blade and compete for it to be kept within the species. It is also the only black-colored lightsaber that has a white background exuding a graceful yet deadly aura.
The Crossguard Lightsaber: An Energy Vent
From the first glance at the crossguard lightsaber, in the Skywalker sequel trilogy, you can easily recognize the two horizontal extra blades. This invention is the credit of Kylo Ren’s intelligence and his emotional standing with the force. The idea of the extra blades is to balance the crack in Kylo’s red lightsaber. Instead of shunning his weapon, Kylo decided to modify it with blades, better known as energy vents. The extra protrusions balance the force energy. Although an intricate design like this requires advanced combat skills, kylo was an expert in handling the crossguard, as shown in an intense duel in the snowy forest at Starkiller base.
Rancor Tooth Lightsaber: Jedi Young Knights
The ‘Young Jedi Knights’ is filled with captivating characters holding even more ethereal lightsaber designs, sizes, and colors. From Lobecca to Tenel Ka Djo, each individual has an awe-inspiring lightsaber construction journey. Tenel Ka Djo’s struggles stand out particularly because her hurdles are met with a strong and resilient character. Her first lightsaber was built using rancor tooth for the hilt and the lava crystal for a blade. When assembled it took a grey hue, no peculiar than her second turquoise lightsaber. In Star Wars lore these colors were sighted for the first time. Fans wish to see these lightsabers again, only this time with more durability and agility.
The Cyan Lightsaber: Gift from Fallen order
The cyan lightsaber and other rarely seen color options are best affiliated with the Jedi Knight: Fallen Order video game. As part of the gaming experience, the users can customize their lightsaber with various choices, including cyan and indigo. In the game, you have to acquire different lightsaber parts, after unlocking the conquests. The lightsaber itself is not rooted in a deep history or legendary battles. Maybe, in the future Star Wars will expand on this idea!
Apart from the association with the game protagonist, Cal Kestis, the cyan lightsaber has been spotted in ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ (animated series)’ and ‘Rebels’. Ahsoka Tano is a courageous Torguta species, that uses the unmistakable cyan lightsaber to change the course of her Jedi life and force association.
Yellow Lightsaber: A Symbol Of Hope
Lastly, on our list is the yellow lightsaber that has appeared time and time again in Star Wars, while protecting Jedi temples and doing the brave and spiritual. However, the last appearance in, Rise Of The Skywalker, is specifically appealing.
Yellow lightsaber showing up in the hands of a Skywalker, yet not a true Skywalker, was a dramatic debut unexpected from the predictable space fantasy. Rey holding the bright striking blade could be a symbol of hope for the Jedi Order, and the dominating yet extinction, Skywalker family. As with the precious wilders. Jedi temple guards and the wise Jedi Consular, the deliberate introduction of a rare color could mean something great for the anticipating Star Wars audience.
This coming summer, the release of The Acolyte has a bunch of us screeching like Ewoks. We may see more rare colors, or better yet, the history behind the already present unique crystal hues will be explored!
