Coat styles to kick off the winter months!

The weather is beginning to get a little chillier and this might have you thinking about a new winter coat. A winter coat is essential for warmth; however, they do not have to only be practical, they can also be stylish.

Different coats suit different looks, and some are more formal than others. When choosing a new coat, think about where you will be wearing it and what the weather will be like. Does it need to be smart enough for the office or able to withstand heavy rain showers and wind?

Here are just a few of the top coat styles ideal for the winter, including tips on when to wear them and how to style them:

Bubble Coat

This first style of coat is ideal for those that have a love for streetwear fashion. Bubble coats are named that way to reflect their shape, which is created by the layers of insulated material. These coats are perfect for cold destinations as their insulation creates plenty of warmth.

These coats come in lots of different variations. For example, RSO’s bubble coats range from plain neutral style to those with metallic materials and graphic prints. These coats have zipper pockets and elasticated wrists, some come with hoods that can be removed when needed.

How do you style a bubble coat? There are lots of options, including stacked jeans and sneakers, you could also pair your coat with cargo pants and wear a hoodie and graphic t-shirt underneath for added warmth.

If you are wearing a larger sweater or hoodie underneath, you may want to consider whether to size up your coat so there is enough room for extra layers.

Trench Coat

Trench coats have been around for more than a century and have been adapted from traditional military uniforms. They can be single breasted or double breasted and come in a range of different fabrics and lengths.

For more formal occasions, a trench coat can look extra smart on top of a button-up shirt or a suit. Leather shoes or loafers can add to the polished look too.

If you are wearing your trench coat as part of a more casual look. You could style it with some straight leg jeans, a plain t-shirt and converse style shoes or lightweight sneakers.

Peacoat

The peacoat also has military roots and was worn traditionally by sailors in the Navy. They are a shorter cut than the trench coat to allow for ease of movement and have a collar that can be flipped upwards to protect the neck from harsh winds. The peacoat is generally made from thick wool for warmth and rigid structure.

If you are a minimalist hoping to have just one winter coat then the peacoat might be suitable, while it’s a little more casual than other overcoats, it is smart enough to be worn for occasions such as a restaurant meal or trip to the bar.

Wear a dark colored peacoat with some navy chinos and black leather desert boots for a sleek day to evening look. Alternatively, your favorite jeans and sneakers can be worn for a more dressed-down look.

For a cool winter look, pair your peacoat with thick wool chinos, a winter hat and some suede Chelsea boots. You can even add a pair of leather gloves for extra warmth, try matching the glove color to your boots for a well-coordinated outfit.

Parka Coat

Warm, comfortable and stylish, the parka is the ideal coat to get you through the winter months. It’s a mid to long length coat that is often recognized with its fur trimmed hood.

The parka is great as a casual piece if you are just taking a trip to the grocery store or a walk at the park. For these occasions, pair your parka with some sweatpants, sneakers and a hoodie.
